34 | 1012 | 1998 & 1999 | Believe One of our loyal and faithful fans - "Stlthriot" - lives in South Dakota, and he's a MASSIVE trance and techno fan of our chart. He recently stated that this was probably the one song that got him hooked on the dance music genre about 5 years ago. Trance and techno is about as scarce in South Dakota as palm trees, so he listens to all of his favourite music via the web. This was pretty much a breakthrough song for Cher, as it essentially introduced the concept of techno-like sounds to the mainstream pop music world. It was also the longest-running # 1 smash and biggest-selling single of Cher's entire 40-year career. | Cher
4 | 67 | 1998 | Bitter Sweet Symphony The Verve existed as a band for about 10 years. They broke-up for the final time shortly after this masterpiece became an International chart smash. Its lyrics were written by lead singer Richard Ashcroft; however, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were ultimately credited in a court-order due to the fact that it used an Andrew Oldham Orchestra re-working of The Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time" as its melody. | The Verve
8 | 247 | 1998 | Brimful Of Asha Norman Cook - AKA Fatboy Slim - took this 1997 chart dud and turned it into a funky # 1 U.K. pop and dance smash in February 1998. His remix was actually featured as the "B-side" of the original single. It debuted on our chart at # 2 that summer, and it spent its first 3 weeks in a row at # 2 - just below the # 1 smash at the time - "It's Like That" from Run D.M.C. / Jason Nevins. | Cornershop
20 | 572 | 1998 | Closing Time Semisonic are from Minneapolis Minnesota. In March 1998 they released their 2ND album "Feeling Strangely Fine". It included this smash anthem that spent nearly 9 months as a hit on U.S. CHR-POP radio. It's been a fixture at graduations, sporting events, and bars and clubs ever since then as an obvious sign that the end is near. But you should always keep in mind that 'every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end'. | Semisonic
11 | 165 | 1998 | Everything's Gonna Be Alright Sweetbox was a German project that enjoyed some success on the hit music charts during the late-1990s. This was their breakthrough single with one-time lead singer Tina Harris at the helm. It was a TOP 10 smash all across Europe. It was also HUGE in Asia - particularly Japan. It's melody was quite memorable for classical music lovers. It was based on a composition from Johann Sebastian Bach ("Air On The G String"). | Sweetbox
12 | 335 | 1998 & 1999 | Fire Escape Of the 3 Fastball songs that were released commercially and played on U.S. hit music radio in 1998 and 1999 this middle song was (and still is) my favourite. It was their follow-up to their debut # 1 smash (on our chart) "The Way" which spent 36 weeks in a row on our chart. This one was with us for only 12 weeks, but for me it's the most memorable of their trio of hits. (They followed it up with the U.S. TOP 20 hit "Out Of My Head" during the Summer Of 1999.) | Fastball
8 | 169 | 1998 | Flagpole Sitta Harvey Danger formed in 1992 at the University Of Washington. They eventually found great success 6 years later with this single track in 1998 that was huge at alternative and pop radio stations and on MTV and VH1. It had the fun retro feel of an early-1980s European punk rock tune. It was from their album "Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone ?". It was prominently featured in the 1998 box office smash "American Pie" although it wasn't available on the official soundtrack of the movie. | Harvey Danger
29 | 488 | 1998 & 1999 | Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It It spent 32 weeks on the Billboard HOT 100 in 1998 including 3 weeks at # 1 in March, but it enjoyed less success right here on our chart. After 14 weeks on the chart (peaking at # 6) it fell off of the chart - only to reappear again 32 weeks later at the end of the year. It hit the TOP 10 again during an even shorter chart run (8 weeks), but then it re-entered again in the Spring Of 1999 for 7 more weeks. | Will Smith
18 | 244 | 1998 | Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are) It was the highest of 9 new entries at # 28 during the final week of June 1998, and just 3 weeks later it had stormed all the way up to # 2 on our chart. It kinda sorta sounded like "Islands In The Stream" - a # 1 smash from 1983 from Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. | Pras Michel Ft. Ol' Dirty Bastard & Introducing Mya
13 | 422 | 1998 | Hey Now Now Denny and Kenny Scott are identical twin brothers from Jacksonville Florida born on January 27th 1969. In July 1998 they released their debut CD "Ask Anybody". Their only hit single from the CD was this pop smash that spent 13 weeks on our chart and peaked at # 2 on the 4th Of July in 1998. This is one of my favourite songs of all-time ! | Swirl 360
10 | 278 | 1998 | It's Like That It didn't spend very much time on our chart, but it debuted with a vengeance. It shot straight-in at # 1 at the end of May 1998, and it stayed there for 3 weeks. It only spent 10 weeks on our chart, but it spent 20 weeks on the U.K. chart including 6 weeks at # 1. This was by far their biggest hit ever all over the European continent. Run-D.M.C. are Joseph Simmons (Run) and Darryl McDaniels (D.M.C.). Their deejay was Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay). He was murdered on Wednesday October 30th 2002 at 7:30 PM in a recording studio in Queens New York City. | Run-D.M.C. Vs. Jason Nevins
31 | 545 | 1998 & 1999 | Never Ever All Saints were frequently compared to The Spice Girls, but their goal all along was to set themselves apart from the Spices. They enjoyed a lot of success on the pop charts from 1997 to 2001 - mostly outside of the U.S. market. This "Amazing Grace" sounding track was their only major hit here stateside. It was HUGE in the U.K. where it won two Brit Awards in 1998 for British Single and British Video. | All Saints
27 | 822 | 1998 & 1999 | Nobody's Supposed To Be Here Canadian R & B singer Deborah Cox stormed onto our chart as a debut artist in November 1998 with this track that soon became a runaway dance smash on the pop charts. It ended up spending 5 out of its 27 weeks with us all the way at the top - # 1. Deborah followed it up with three additional dance hits several years later during our 'Pure Dance Era' - "Absolutely Not" (# 2 in 2002), "Mr. Lonely" (# 11 in 2003), and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" (# 4 in 2003). | Deborah Cox
9 | 220 | 1998 | One More Night Amber's 2ND of 7 hits from 1996 to 2002 was only on the chart for 9 weeks in the Spring Of 1998, but 5 of those 9 weeks were at # 1. It's haunting melody thoroughly captured the sounds of the European dance floors of the late-1990s. | Amber
41 | 1237 | 1998 & 1999 | One Week Barenaked Ladies are from Toronto Ontario Canada, and this Autumn 1998 release was MASSIVE. It was so MASSIVE that to this day it remains as 1 of only 6 songs in our entire 18½-year history that have spent 10 or more weeks at the top of our chart. It ended up spending a MASSIVE 41 weeks in a row on our chart including 26 consecutive weeks in the TOP 10 ! | Barenaked Ladies
17 | 350 | 1998 & 1999 | Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) The Offspring have been together as a group since they were in High School in 1984. In 1998 this song (on MP3) was illegally downloaded a record 22 million times over a 10-week time period long before it hit the pop charts. "Americana" was released later in November 1998, and it included this TOP 15 smash as well as its TOP 10 follow-up "Why Don't You Get A Job ?" | The Offspring
21 | 445 | 1998 | Sex & Candy John Wozniak is the lead singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer. He was born in St. Paul Minnesota in January 1971, and he attended grade school at Marcy Open in Minneapolis. He was picked on all the time by his fellow schoolmates at the Marcy Playground. It affected his music in the future. This was his band's biggest hit. It spent 21 weeks on our chart including 5 weeks in a row in the TOP 5. | Marcy Playground
| -- | -- | -- | 1998 | Smack My Bitch Up It may have only reached # 89 on the U.S. pop chart (TOP 10 in the U.K.), but it was clearly a runaway club smash stateside. This techno romp had very few lyrics, and they were certainly controversial - "Change my pitch up. Smack my bitch up." That didn't stop the clubbers from slamming the dance floors to its pulsating beat. The Major remembers getting over-exposed to this song during much of 1998 courtesy of his younger brother in the Jacksonville Florida area. | Prodigy |
11 | 278 | 1998 | So In Love With You It was originally mixed by Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and released in Europe in 1994. It was a European hit in 1995, and it made it onto the U.K. pop chart in 1996. A year later it made it across the Atlantic where it was a smash at the U.S. clubs. It was sort of like a disco hit (think Sylvester) stuck in the middle of 1997. It even crossed-over onto a few U.S. hit music stations in 1998 where it became a smash at a few. It was from Duke's (Mark Adam's) self-titled CD. | Duke
22 | 505 | 1998 | Superhero (Lover) This European dance smash was MASSIVE in 1998 here on our chart. It spent 22 weeks with us including 15 weeks in the TOP 10, 9 weeks in the TOP 5, 6 weeks in the TOP 3, and 2 weeks at # 1. It finished the year as the # 17 smash overall. Daze were a trio based out of Denmark. This is pure Eurodance. I miss those European club beats of the mid-to-late-1990s ! | Daze
17 | 536 | 1998 | Take Me Away This hard-edged techno-rave tune was originally released in the U.K. in January 1993. It was a flop on the U.K. chart, as it only spent 2 weeks in the TOP 75 - peaking at # 51. Perhaps its style was way ahead of its time ? It wasn't until over 5 years later in early-1998 when it was released as a CD single on New York City's Phat Cat Records. It exploded in dance clubs all over Florida, and later in 1998 its success eventually made its way onto the radio airwaves where it was MASSIVE on POWER-96 and Y-100 in Miami, and XL-106.7 in Orlando. Here on our chart it spent 3 weeks at # 1 and 5 weeks at # 2 in September and October 1998. | Mix Factory
14 | 299 | 1998 & 1999 | Take Me There The fun "Want U Back Mix" samples "I Want You Back" - the 1969-1970 debut # 1 smash from The Jackson 5. It's from the animated Nickelodeon hit "The Rugrats Movie". It hit # 14 on the U.S. chart, # 7 on the U.K. chart, and # 5 here on our chart in February 1999. | Blackstreet & Mya Ft. Mase & Blinky Blink
30 | 906 | 1998 & 1999 | Tearin' Up My Heart 'N Sync scored 11 TOP 40 hits from 1998 to 2001 - 5 ballads and 6 harder songs. They reinforced the boy band revolution of the late-1990s which rejuvenated U.S. hit music radio. This was their 2ND hit - and 2ND consecutive # 1 smash here on our chart. This song plays a vital role as a MASSIVE memory for me in that it's the very first song I ever performed LIVE in public Karaoke style ! | 'N Sync
30 | 899 | 1998 & 1999 | This Kiss It's the way you love me. It's a feeling like this. It's centrifugal motion. It's perpetual bliss. It's that pivotal moment. It's ahh impossible. "This Kiss" - "This Kiss" - unstoppable - "This Kiss" - "This Kiss" - unthinkable - "This Kiss" - "This Kiss" - unsinkable - "This Kiss" - "This Kiss" - subliminal - "This Kiss" - "This Kiss" - it's criminal - "This Kiss" - "This Kiss". It's the way you love me baby. It's the way you love me darlin'. | Faith Hill
