5 | 57 | 1996 & 1997 | All Mixed Up 311 hail from Omaha Nebraska, and they've been together as a group since 1991 although their origins actually date back to the mid-1980s when 3 of the 5 members attended high school together in the west side of town and performed their music after school. They hit the big-time in 1996 with their self-titled CD and the hit radio singles "Down" and this pop-crossover smash. | 311
9 | 155 | 1996 | Big Me Dave Grohl wrote every song and played every instrument on Foo Fighters' self-titled July 1995 debut album. He did all of this in October 1994 when the band didn't actually exist yet. Once the album was released the band had been formed. This was their biggest pop smash ever. It was a mellow tune with a happy early-1970s retro sound to it that sounded like an extended version of a bubbly TV commercial jingle. In fact its video resembled the popular Mentos commercials at the time. | Foo Fighters
38 | 449 | 1996 & 1997 | Children Italian Pianist / DJ Robert Miles wrote this early instrumental trance track in 1994 as a way for ravers to slow things down a bit and chill at the end of a long hard night on the dancefloor. It was released as a commercial single in 1995, and it eventually became a worldwide smash during much of 1996 - including here in the U.S. where it skirted with the TOP 20 on the mainstream pop chart. It spent a MASSIVE 38 weeks in a row on our chart. It was on his "Dreamland" CD. | Robert Miles
33 | 772 | 1996 & 1997 | C'Mon N' Ride It (The Train) Producers Nathaniel 'C.C. Lemonhead' Orange and Johnny 'Jay Ski' McGowan met in a Jacksonville Florida high school. They united in Orlando to create a Miami bass sound during the mid-1990s. This million-seller platinum dance smash entered the national hit music charts in March 1996, and it remained there for over 9 months through the end of the year. It spent 33 weeks on our chart, and it was our # 2 smash overall in 1996. | Quad City DJs
26 | 592 | 1996 & 1997 | Counting Blue Cars It spent 26 weeks on our chart from July 1996 to January 1997, and it peaked at # 2 at the end of September. It finished the year as the # 6 song overall in 1996. It also spent an incredible 11 months on the U.S. pop chart even though it only reached # 15. It included the memorable line - 'Tell me all your thoughts on God, cause I'd really like to meet her.' | Dishwalla
21 | 519 | 1996 & 1997 | Do You Miss Me ? The Major got the deejay to play his favourite song in 1996, and it's what kept him holding on well into 1997. This dancehall smash peaked at # 3 for 4 weeks, and it spent all but 2 of its 21 weeks on the chart within the TOP 10 ! | Jocelyn Enriquez
15 | 352 | 1996 | Everything Falls Apart The Dog's Eye View that exists today in 2006 is completely different from The Dog's Eye View that existed a decade ago when this was a # 1 smash on our chart. The one constant is the lead singer - Peter Stuart. It's his band, and he's got a completely different one now. They are even on an Indie label now - Vanguard Records. | Dog's Eye View
5 | 74 | 1996 | Glycerine Some place the 'death' of grunge music right around the Summer Of 1994, but Bush kept it alive with their "Sixteen Stone" CD in 1995 and 1996. It was sort of like a throwback album of the sounds of earlier in the decade. This was their biggest hit stateside - a hit I often refer to as 'the perfect grunge song'. | Bush
22 | 391 | 1996 | Insensitive While Alanis Morissette was topping the chart with back-to-back hits fellow Canadian Jann Arden (from Calgary Alberta) was just getting started with her driving power ballad "Insensitive". It was MASSIVE here on our chart, as it spent 22 weeks in a row with us - peaking at # 3. It was one of the TOP 15 songs of 1996. It also spent over 9 months on the Billboard HOT 100 in 1996 ! | Jann Arden
| -- | -- | -- | 1996 | In The Meantime Spacehog were from Leeds England but they were based out of New York City. They were together from 1994 to 2002. This breakthrough hit is from their 1995 album "Resident Alien", and it was a TOP 40 hit (barely) at U.S. hit music radio during the Summer Of 1996. It reached the TOP 30 (barely) in their native U.K. early the next year in January 1997. | Spacehog |
20 | 452 | 1996 | Jellyhead It was the 'Motiv 8 Pumphouse Remix' that made this one of the greatest pop-dance songs in modern hit music history. It entered our chart straight-in at # 2, and then the very next week it climbed a notch to # 1 where it stayed for 8 weeks in a row ! It was the # 3 dance song of the entire year (1996). Crush would never be heard from again. My hopes for a "Jellyhead Part 2" were crushed. | Crush
23 | 471 | 1996 & 1997 | Lovefool The Cardigans out of Sweden were led by Nina Persson on lead vocals. This MASSIVESMASH spent 49 weeks (nearly a year) on the U.S. pop chart through most of 1997. It spent 23 weeks on our chart. It was also a hit during much of the Summer Of 1997 in the U.K. On all 3 charts it peaked at # 2. | The Cardigans
8 | 191 | 1996 & 1997 | Love Rollercoaster Red Hot Chili Pepper fans will probably state that this wasn't one of their better hits. It wasn't their biggest hit. It wasn't their most memorable hit. In fact it's rather forgettable - perhaps an inferior throwaway remake from a cartoon movie soundtrack. But these MASSIVE Memories are all about me, and it's my favourite hit from the L.A. rock band. | Red Hot Chili Peppers
44 | 833 | 1996 | 1979 The Smashing Pumpkins survived as a band for 10 years from 1991 to 2001. Billy Corgan was the lead singer, and he wrote all of the songs. "1979" was released in January 1996 as the follow-up to "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". A month after its release it entered our chart where it spent the rest of the year - 44 weeks in all - including 23 weeks in our TOP 10. It was our # 1 smash overall in 1996. | The Smashing Pumpkins
33 | 697 | 1996 & 1997 | Ooh Aah ... Just A Little Bit Eurodance was at its peak during the mid-1990s, and this HI-NRG dance romp took advantage of the situation. This was actually the U.K.'s entry for the Eurovision music contest in 1996. It ended up finishing in 7TH place, but it blew up pop charts all around the world anyway. It spent a MASSIVE 25 weeks on the U.K. pop chart (and peaked at # 1). It held on to the U.S. pop chart for 30 weeks well into June 1997. It spent 33 weeks in a row right here on our chart including 4 weeks at # 2. | Gina G
6 | 105 | 1996 | Peaches Just because we host a pure dance chart now does not mean that our MASSIVE Memories are limited to dance music. After all we know where we came from. We know where are roots are. We hosted a mainstream pop chart from 1985 to 1992 and from 1995 to 2001. This modern rock hit crossed-over to the pop chart during the Spring Of 1996, and it actually soared to # 2 here on our chart. This novelty track had me dancing in the aisles of Publix for those sweet tasty peaches. Millions of peaches. Peaches for me. Millions of peaches. Peaches for free ... | The Presidents Of The United States Of America
3 | 28 | 1996 | Pepper The Butthole Surfers are from San Antonio Texas, and they've been together for over 20 years. This was their only U.S. pop chart hit. It spent nearly 5 months on the chart. It's the sad story about Marky, Sharon, Cherice, Mikey, Bobby, Tommy, (another) Mikey, Flipper, a football player, and Holly. They were all in love with dyin'. | Butthole Surfers
3 | 69 | 1996 | Plush I've often described this hit as 'the greatest hard rock song ever made'. It's from their legendary 1992 album "Core". It was a long-running radio hit in the U.S. for about 7 months during the latter half of 1993 into 1994, but our chart was on hiatus back then. 3 years later in June 1996 it entered our chart - straight-in at # 1. | Stone Temple Pilots
| -- | -- | -- | 1996 | Popular He's head of the class. He's a quarterback. His mom says he's a catch. He's never last picked. He's got a cheerleader chick. He's the party star. He's got his own car. He'll never get caught. He makes football bets. He's a teacher's pet. He's "Popular". He followed 'The Teenage Guide To Popularity'. | Nada Surf |
| -- | -- | -- | 1996 | Scooby Snacks The Fun Lovin' Criminals may be a one-hit-wonder here stateside, but elsewhere they've enjoyed some success on the pop charts. Over in the U.K. they amassed 8 TOP 40 hits in a row from 1996 to 2001. This was their first one from August 1996. They are still popular today in the U.K. where they make regular appearances. This fun and catchy track was on their 1996 "Come Find Yourself" album. | Fun Lovin' Criminals |
7 | 76 | 1996 | Set U Free It was way ahead of its time - an early trance song from over 7 years ago ! It spent 26 weeks on the national pop chart from October 1995 to April 1996, and it peaked at # 26. It only spent 7 weeks here on our chart in June and July of 1996, but it may just be our earliest trance song ever ! | Planet Soul
13 | 334 | 1996 | Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Musician Chris O'Connor recorded this song and the entire "Rocket" album in his garage. It had a long title, and it enjoyed a long 4-week reign at # 1 here on our chart during the entire month of July 1996. It spent over 5 months on the U.S. pop chart reaching the TOP 10. It includes a repeating sample of B.B. King's 1964 tune "How Blue Can You Get". | Primitive Radio Gods
8 | 88 | 1996 | The Real Thing The World Wide Message Tribe (later known as simply The Tribe) were a British Christian HI-NRG dance group (with varying members) out of Manchester England from 1991 to 2004. This is from their 1996 album "Jumping In The House Of God". It was a TOP 25 hit on the U.S. dance chart in 1996, and it was a TOP 10 smash on our chart. | The World Wide Message Tribe
27 | 649 | 1996 & 1997 | Wannabe The Spice Girls ('Sporty', 'Scary', 'Baby', 'Ginger', and 'Posh') were one of the most successful all-female pop groups of all-time. They hit our chart with 7 different singles from 1996 to 2000, and it all started with this breakthrough International debut smash that shot straight-in to our chart at # 1 and stayed there for 7 weeks. It was a total # 1 smash in over 30 countries around the world, and it was the biggest-selling single ever by an all-female group. Now that's what I call a MASSIVE Memory ! | The Spice Girls
| -- | -- | -- | 1996 | What I Got Sublime formed in Long Beach California during the late-1980s hair metal era, but success came much later for the band during the post-grunge era via their self-titled CD and this radio and MTV hit. In fact it came too late for their lead singer who died of a fatal heroin overdose just a few months before they hit the big time. | Sublime |
10 | 250 | 1996 | When I Come Around Green Day are often credited for developing modern punk-pop - the same punk-pop style that's still the rage today. "Dookie" was their breakthrough CD that was released at the beginning of February 1994. It took U.S. hit music radio nearly a year to catch on to this song, but once it hit the airwaves it dominated for virtually all of 1995 becoming their biggest hit to date. It took even longer to hit our chart - eventually topping out for two weeks in February 1996. | Green Day
