There's a reason why this was the only Michael Jackson song to hit # 1 here on our chart. It's the same reason why it spent a MASSIVE 10 weeks in a row at the top. It's the best Michael Jackson song ever. America apparently thought so as well. It tied "Billie Jean" as the longest-running # 1 smash (7 weeks) of his entire 30-year-plus solo career. I remember when a certain heritage TOP 40 radio station here in South Florida aired this song sans the rap portion from Bill Bottrell. Meanwhile an upstart hot adult contemporary radio station aired it - rap and all.

Tell me what you need and I'll take heed and lead you in the right direction for affection. See what I'm saying. I ain't playing. Stop delaying girl and make me your Natural Selection. When I first heard this jam in 1991 I thought it was a brand new song from Prince. Ironically "Cream" from the Purple One himself actually replaced this song at # 1 in November 1991.
Natural Selection
1196571991 & 1992Here We Go, Let's Rock & Roll
Following hot on the heels of "Gonna Make Me Sweat" this follow-up track took off on the radio less than a month after I returned from the Saudi Arabian desert and Operation Desert Storm. It spent 19 weeks on the chart, and 17 of those weeks were within the TOP 10 (including 12 weeks in a row within the TOP 5). It was the # 7 song overall on this chart in 1991, and I liked this one more than "Gonna Make You Sweat" which enjoyed bigger chart success globally.
C + C Music Factory: Freedom Williams & Zelma Davis
1268431991Joyride
Hello ... You Fool ... I Love You ... It debuted on our chart at # 3 in March 1991, and it went on to spend 4 non-consecutive weeks at # 1. It actually spent its first 21 weeks in a row within the TOP 10 (15 within the TOP 5). It finished the year as the # 1 smash of 1991 by a MASSIVE margin !
Roxette
1244821991 & 1992Kiss Them For Me
It was a TOP 25 hit on the U.S. pop chart from August to November 1991, and then it entered our pop chart during the 1ST week of November 1991. By the middle of January 1992 it had climbed to # 2 in its 11TH week on our chart. Once March 1992 arrived it had completely fallen off of our chart after 17 weeks. 3 months later it reappeared, and in its 23RD week on our chart it hit # 1 on the 4th Of July in 1992. But then after 2 weeks at # 1 it suddenly disappeared from our chart. It went from # 1 to nothing in a single week !
Siouxsie And The Banshees
132481991Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)
This catchy pop single is a cult classic. It was a huge smash during the last four months of 1974. So how does it become a MASSIVE Memory ? It's because it's one of my favourite pop songs of all time. It also inexplicably made it onto our pop chart while it was being compiled briefly in the Saudi Arabian desert shortly after the end of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Joey Levine was the lead singer of Reunion. He was also the lead singer of The Ohio Express. Perhaps you may remember their Summer Of 1968 smash - "Yummy Yummy Yummy" ?

In 1991 a lot of 'hair-metal' / 'glam-rock' bands fell by the wayside as rock fans went from happy to sad and embraced an entirely different feel courtesy of Seattle's Grunge movement. But Firehouse not only managed to debut well after the 'big-hair' era of rock had supposedly died - they also prospered. This is their U.S. TOP 5 gold smash from late in 1991.

218791991Macho Man
The cop. The cowboy. The construction worker. The Indian chief. The biker. The soldier. They were The Village People - one of the most popular disco groups of the era. Their short stint in American pop culture can be summarized with three hits that everyone knew - "Y.M.C.A.", "In The Navy", and this debut gold smash from the Summer Of 1978. It enjoyed an unusual 8-week run on our chart at the end of 1991.
The Village People
15121411991 & 1992O.P.P.
Their first hit was also their highest-charting and biggest-selling hit. It hit # 6 and was certified double-platinum nationally on the U.S. pop chart. Here on our chart it sneaked into the TOP 15 for a single week, and it finished 1991 as the # 97 jam of the entire year. To this day I am proud to announce that I am still down with O.P.P. (yeah you know me).
Naughty By Nature
2287471991Right Here, Right Now
This uplifting track from Jesus Jones' album "Doubt" was HUGE on our chart during the latter half of 1991. It spent 28 weeks on our chart - 11 in our TOP 10 and 21 in our TOP 20. It was our # 3 smash overall in 1991 - right behind The Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" at # 2 and Roxette's "Joyride" at # 1. "Right Here, Right Now". There is no other place I want to be. "Right Here, Right Now". Watching the world wake up from history.

1133461991Shiny Happy People
This was the immediate follow-up to R.E.M.'s biggest hit "Losing My Religion" from their 1991 smash album "Out Of Time". It featured Kate Pierson of The B-52s on backing vocals. It spent 13 shiny happy weeks with us from August to October 1991 including a single week at # 1 in September 1991.

OK. Now that you know. I know you know that I know you know - that this is my favourite LL Cool J song of all time. It was the 4TH and final single released from his MASSIVE Summer Of 1990 CD "Mama Said Knock You Out" which also included 2 other favourites of mine - the hardcore title track and "Around The Way Girl". This song was a total flop on the U.S. pop chart (# 95 in September 1991), but it spent 3 successful months here on our chart.

Cathy Dennis scored a string of U.S. hits in 1989, 1990, and 1991 with "C'mon And Get My Love", "Just Another Dream", "Touch Me (All Night Long)", and this # 2 smash on our chart. Nowadays Cathy writes hits. She co-wrote Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and Britney Spears' "Toxic". A well-done fan site for Cathy appears at www.irresistiblecathy.com.

EMF were from Forest Of Dean in Gloucestershire England - not too far away from Fairford where I lived for two years from 1985 to 1987. This U.S. # 1 / U.K. # 3 smash was the first song in our chart's history to spend 10 or more weeks at # 1. It was the # 4 song overall in 1991. It's one of my favourite songs of all time !

1133801991Voices That Care
I served at Al Kharj AB in Saudi Arabia during the first Persian Gulf War for exactly 9 weeks from January 05th 1991 through March 09th 1991. This chart was on hiatus during the first 7 weeks of the war. Just a week after I returned stateside this song arrived on our chart. David Foster and his financee Linda Thompson Jenner led this all-star choir of over 100 U.S. musicians, actors, and sports stars in a patriotic salute to the allied troops and their families. It hit # 1 on our chart at the end of April 1991. A 30-minute VHS video on the making of the song and the video complemented the single at the time.

The last time I was in Las Vegas I spent a lot of time at Caesars Palace (right next door to the Mirage where I stayed) - specifically shopping about the Forum Shops. I remember in 2002 when the Colosseum was being built out front of Caesar's. Nowadays Celine calls the Colosseum her home for her long-standing engagement. There are a lot of hits to choose from, but "If You Asked Me To" pick an all-time favourite I'd have to go with this 1991 debut smash that started it all. Celine was only 22 when she recorded it.

2267441991 & 1992Wind Of Change
The Scorpions (from Germany) had a memorable hit in 1984 with "Rock You Like A Hurricane". But in 1991 they scored an International pop smash with this powerful tune that was a worldwide anthem to the fall of the Berlin Wall and Communism, and the end of the Cold War. It spent 6 months on the U.S. pop chart (reaching # 4), and 6 months here on our chart (reaching # 2). 2005 marks the 40TH anniversary of The Scorpions as a group.
