1216711989Baby Don't Forget My Number
Here's a song that dominated the charts and pop culture during the Summer Of 1989. It's a song that spent 21 weeks on our chart from the middle of May to the beginning of October. A song that spent 8 consecutive weeks at # 1 - longer than any other # 1 smash in 1989. It also spent 19 out of its 21 weeks within the TOP 15. I saw Milli Vanilli LIVE in concert at the Miami Arena on Friday June 30th 1989 when Club MTV On Tour arrived. Also performing were The Information Society, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Tone Loc, and Was (Not Was).

6143331989Bring Me Edelweiss
This rather obscure dance romp from Austria received very little radio airplay here in the U.S. in 1989, but it was quite MASSIVE on MTV - particularly "Club MTV" - the daily afternoon pop and dance show that was hosted by Downtown Julie Brown. I bought it on cassette single, and I played it over and over again until it wore itself out. It finished out the year as the # 43 song overall.

Young M.C. was born in London England but raised in Queens New York. He was the co-writer of two huge hits for Tone Loc - "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina". In 1989 and 1990 he spent a MASSIVE 9 months on the U.S. pop chart with his own TOP 10 smash. It peaked at # 3 here on our chart as we were busting a move from the 1980s to the 1990s.

4122941989 & 1990Call It Love
Poco has been in existence for nearly my entire life - over 35 years - and the're still together today touring and recording. In 1989 they released their "Legacy" album which included "Call It Love" - their longest-running U.S. chart hit to date (16 weeks) and 2ND highest-charting hit ever (# 18). This may be one of the most-played songs on cassette single in my own home since 1990, as it's one of my favourite songs of all time !
Poco
1155261989Cover Girl
Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight, Jon Knight, and Danny Wood were as hot as can be on the pop charts in 1988, 1989, and 1990. Their "Hangin' Tough" album (released in September 1988) yielded 5 TOP 10 singles on the U.S. pop chart. Here on our chart they scored with 4 # 1 smash hits into 1990, and this was the biggest of them all. It spent 6 consecutive weeks at the top of our chart, and it's my favourite New Kids On The Block song of all-time !
New Kids On The Block
11142011989 & 1990Don't Know Much
It's from Linda Ronstadt's 1989 album "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind", and it won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. It was the longest-running hit of her entire career, as it spent a full 6 months on the U.S. pop chart and peaked at # 2 for 2 weeks. It spent 14 weeks on our chart and peaked at # 11 in February 1990.
Linda Ronstadt Ft. Aaron Neville
2103041989Harry Houdini
It spent 10 weeks on our pop chart during the Summer Of 1989 including its last 8 weeks within the TOP 10. This was Kon Kan's # 2 follow-up to the # 1 smash "I Beg Your Pardon". Kon Kan were Barry Harris & Kevin Wynne. The sounds of Barry Harris are still prevalent today as he is one-half of the producing and remixing team (with Chris Cox) known as Thunderpuss.

212291989(I Know) I'm Losing You
Oak Lawn Records originally released this club smash by Uptown (later known as The Uptown Girls) on 7" and 12" vinyl late in 1986. It was a dance remake of The Temptations TOP 10 hit of the same name from 20 years earlier. In 1989 new HI-NRG remixed versions were released. Miami's Y-100 frequently played the new versions that year while they were broadcasting LIVE on Friday and Saturday nights from various dance clubs all around South Florida. Longtime DJ Al Chio would often begin the LIVE broadcast with it, and it helped to get the party started.

1132691989Iko Iko
This song actually dates back over 55 years to New Orleans' Mardi Gras. It's been covered over the years by many different artists. The Belle Stars covered it in 1982, and it was their first U.K. chart hit. 7 years later stateside it was rejuvenated by its presence in the box office smash "Rain Man". It was a frequently-requested song on the radio, and its video (featuring clips from "Rain Man") was HUGE on MTV.

3163921989 & 1990(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me
Nowadays Paula Abdul is one of the judges on the hit TV show "American Idol", but back in the day she was one of the top superstars on the radio with 6 out of 7 American # 1 hits in 1989, 1990, and 1991. The lone single that did not reach the top of the Billboard chart during those 3 years was this gem from the end of 1989. It hit # 3 nationally, as well as right here on our chart.

261671989Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)
You may be wondering why this classic 1960s parody rock song was inducted into the MASSIVE memories. After all it's a U.S. # 1 pop smash from January 1968, and our MASSIVE memories only go back to 1985. What you may not know is that it made a comeback on our chart during the Summer Of 1989 when it soared to # 2 in June. It finished the year as the # 102 song overall in 1989.
John Fred & His Playboy Band
3214781989 & 1990Just Between You And Me
Before and after the Foreigner album that contained the MASSIVE Memory "Say You Will" the Foreigner front man scored two huge solo hits. "Midnight Blue" was a U.S. TOP 5 smash a year before "Say You Will" early on in 1987, and then late in 1989 he hit again with this long-running pop radio smash that lasted well into 1990.
Lou Gramm
1164571989 & 1990Leave A Light On
As the 1980s were morphing into the 1990s this smash was high atop our TOP 40 chart at the time in the middle of its 4-week reign at # 1. It reached # 4 in the U.K. and # 11 in the U.S. It featured a slide guitar solo from MASSIVE Memory artist George Harrison. It's my favourite Belinda Carlisle song of all time !

3153421989More Than You Know
Martika (Marta Marrero) was barely 20 years old when she scored with this debut smash. It spent 9 weeks on our chart in its original English form. It spent an additional 6 weeks on our chart en Español as "Quiero Entregarte Mi Amor". She followed it up with "Toy Soldiers" which soared all the way to # 1 on the U.S. pop chart in July 1989. Earlier in the 1980s she was one of the teen stars of TV's "Kids, Incorporated" where she played 'Gloria'. She was also in the 1984 cult classic "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo".

4163831989Oh Daddy
Robert Steven Belew was born a couple of days before Christmas in 1949 in Covington Kentucky - just across the mighty Ohio River from Cincinnati. This song was the lead-off track on his 1989 album "Mr. Music Head". His daughter Audie sang back-up vocals on it. Although it struggled on the U.S. pop chart it was a TOP 5 smash at U.S. Modern Rock Radio - as well as on our chart. It was with us for 16 weeks in 1989, and it finished the year as our # 29 smash overall.

13172171989 & 1990Once Bitten Twice Shy
'Glam Metal' / 'Hair Rock' was HUGE during the late-1980s into 1990. Great White was on a long list of successful bands of the genre that included Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Warrant, White Lion, Firehouse, Kix, Winger, and Cinderella. This TOP 5 smash was on the U.S. pop charts from May to November of 1989.

3101471989 & 1990Peace In Our Time
Brooklyn-born Eddie Money scored a string of memorable hits from the late-1970s through the early-1990s including such rockers as "Baby Hold On", "Two Tickets To Paradise", "Take Me Home Tonight", and "Walk On Water". But this was my favourite of them all. It was his last big hit during the early part of 1990, and it was deservedly a TOP 3 smash on our chart.

6163061989Second Chance
38 Special (briefly known as 'Thirty Eight Special') have been together for over 30 years. They enjoyed their greatest success during the 1980s when they had 8 TOP 40 hits including "Hold On Loosely", "Caught Up In You", and the biggest smash of them all - this power ballad that spent 5 months on the U.S. pop charts in 1989. It was their last big hit on the radio.
Thirty Eight Special
1326721989She Drives Me Crazy
This was truly a MASSIVESMASH during the early years of our pop chart. It was on our chart for an incredible 32 weeks in a row from mid-March through mid-October in 1989, and it accumulated an awesome 672 chart points during that time. It was actually at # 1 during its 5TH and 6TH weeks on the chart, and then it just hung around for the next six months as it slowly descended down the chart. I consider this to be one of the greatest pop songs in modern hit music history. It was a great song with a hard-edge beat and a visually-appealing video.
Fine Young Cannibals
1184631989So Alive
Although they never hit the U.K. chart this British trio scored a TOP 3 smash on the American pop chart in 1989. It was also a # 1 smash on the Modern Rock chart, and it hit # 1 for a week on our chart in August 1989. It finished the year as the # 15 song of the entire year on our pop chart at the time. This song is prominently featured in the 2002 movie "The Rules Of Attraction".
Love And Rockets
2133951989Soldier Of Love
In 1989 Donny Osmond scored his first solo hit in nearly 13 years (since he was a teen pop idol). It turned out to be the 2ND biggest smash of his entire career - 2ND only to "Go Away Little Girl" - a # 1 smash from when Donny was just 13 years old. It spent 3 months on our chart, and it was our # 24 smash overall in 1989.

161791989Swing The Mood
DJ Les Hemstock and Mastermixers John Pickles, Andy Pickles, and Ian Morgan got together back in 1989 and decided to mix together a medley of a whole bunch of classic 1950s songs introduced and capped-off by Glenn Miller's "In The Mood". Snippets of Chubby Checker, Bill Haley, Little Richard, The Everly Brothers, and 'Elvis Presley' (via an impersonator) appear in the medley.

2123841989This Time I Know It's For Real
This # 2 HI-NRG dance smash courtesy of Stock, Aitken, & Waterman soared towards the top of the charts a full decade after Donna Summer ruled the pop charts as "The Queen Of Disco".
Donna Summer
1165171989 & 1990We Didn't Start The Fire
'The Piano Man' Billy Joel was a regular fixture on the U.S. pop charts for over 20 years starting in 1974. This was his 3RD of 3 # 1 hits during that time. Its rapid-fire lyrics were essentially a 40-year world history lesson post World War 2 through the end of the 1980s. Now those are MASSIVE Memories ! Fittingly it was the 2ND to last # 1 smash of the '80s on the U.S. pop chart (as well as this chart).

3123051989You Got It
Roy Orbison died of a sudden heart attack on December 06th 1988 at the age of 52. 6 weeks later this one began climbing the U.S. pop chart. It would eventually hit the TOP 10 and become his biggest hit in over 24 years (since his # 1 smash "Oh, Pretty Woman" in 1964). He wrote it with fellow Traveling Wilburys Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.
